I.                   Background

The vision behind USAID’s investment in the tourism sector through USAID’s Tourism for All project is to promote Timor-Leste’s competitiveness as an international tourism destination while preserving its unique environmental and cultural heritage. The purpose of this activity is to expand and improve Timor-Leste’s tourism offerings using an inclusive and sustainable approach. The aim is to facilitate private investment by working with government to establish incentives and obligations that are more private sector-friendly, promote steady and sustainable tourism growth, and safeguard the environment and social characteristics of local communities.

Bamboo Institute was established in 2008 by UNIDO in collaboration with the government to create a bamboo industry in Timor-Leste. Over the last decade Bamboo Institute has created a community value supply chain through investment and training of nurseries, bamboo plantations, and processing groups. With 28 nurseries, over 300 farmers, and 12 processing groups our supply is stronger than ever and can meet high demands for modern and cultural bamboo products. But the true unique element to our social enterprise are the progressive practices of sustainability, environmentalism, and humanitarianism as fundamental business model in this developing country. Here at BI we believe in producing high quality furniture, handicrafts, blinds, briquettes, and other products. Bamboo Institute is working with USAID’s Tourism for All project to enter the tourism market. Through a USAID supported project, Bamboo Institute is establishing tours and a new product line within the manufacturing facility. Bamboo Institute will be working to establish tours of its nursery, plantation, and production line process while also displaying handicrafts for tourist to purchase. This project will last nine months and fuel Bamboo Institute’s entry into tourism.

Bamboo Institute is looking for a Timorese artist to contribute to the organizations growth and being a part of a dedicated and committed team. The team will consist of a product designer, handicraft specialist, and Timorese artist. Potential candidates for the artist position will work closely within the team to design new handicraft products. Bamboo Institute understands the challenge of imprinting Timor-Leste’s spirit and culture within our modern handicrafts, but the potential candidate will get the chance to meet that challenge and help produce diverse and desirable works of art. There will be weekly deadlines for the design of products and the candidate is expected to meet those deadlines and Bamboo Institute’s goals. Bamboo Institute is looking for an artist with attention to detail and a great enthusiasm for creativity. This potential candidate will be the drive for innovative ideas and designs. Bamboo Institute wants to foster that spirit and energy through the team to truly create unique and special products. The artist is expected to collaborate effectively within a team and be open to feedback to ensure the best handicrafts are being designed and eventually produced through our carpenters. Working with our team will increase the employability of the artist and give the opportunity to learn product design software.
