Organisational Environment:
Mary MacKillop Today (formerly known as Mary MacKillop International) is the aid and development organisation of the Sisters of St Joseph. It was established to bring justice and hope for a better future to marginalised and vulnerable communities internationally and currently supports programs in Australia, Timor-Leste, Peru, Fiji and Papua New Guinea in the area of education, health and livelihoods. Mary MacKillop Today also includes a registered Fair-Trade department. Mary MacKillop Today is a signatory organisation to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct which calls for a commitment to ‘good practice’ in the work of aid and development – transparency, accountability of the organisation and the programs and full participation of stakeholders. The Sisters of St Joseph commenced work in East Timor in 1994 as the Mary MacKillop Institute of East Timorese Studies, and is now registered as an international NGO. Our projects focus on literacy education in the Tetun language, health education, parents’ workshops and livelihoods. | |||
Position: Literacy Field Officer | Reports to: Deputy Literacy Program Coordinator | ||
Primary objective of the role: The Field Staff works as part of the Literacy Team to assist in delivering MMT’s Teacher training, monitoring and mentoring for Literacy program, which aims to give teachers and volunteer teachers the competencies they need to deliver quality education to their pre-school and primary students in alignment with the National Curriculum. The Literacy Field Base Officer will be based in the districts where we work, and provide regular monitoring and mentoring to teachers who have attended MMT’s training. | |||

Statement of duties: The following duties are aligned to the 3 major areas of responsibility of the Literacy Field Base Officer: | |||
1. Training, monitoring and mentoring
| The Literacy Field Base Officer will: · Work with the Literacy Team in the preparation of literacy materials and resources for Teacher Training Workshops
· Prepare schedules for training, monitoring and mentoring to the targeted schools. · Conduct regular monitoring of teachers at the classroom teaching · Conduct individual mentoring sessions with teachers after observing teaching in the classroom · Conduct group mentoring sessions with teachers after observing teaching in the classroom. · Assist with the delivery of materials and resources to schools | ||
2. Program Administration | The Literacy Field Base Officer will: · Be fully conversant with the Tetun Literacy Program · Assist the Deputy Literacy Program Coordinator in ensuring all project activities are carried out within the timeframe · Assist in preparing monthly reports · Manage daily field-based office operations · Record all expenses related to office administration · Communicate regularly with the literacy team · Assist in the collection of monitoring & evaluation data for MMT · Assist in the collection of Change Stories for progress and final reports. | ||
3. Representation and Networking
| The Literacy Field Base Officer will: · Attend meetings when required with Ministry of Education of municipality, Catholic Education authorities, and community leaders to present relevant material and provide feedback to the team · Act as liaison person for MMT in the schools and communities we work in for the development and implementation of literacy education · Attend other meetings and relevant courses related to the role · Keep MMT Dili-based staff updated and informed on any developments in the schools and communities where we work. | ||
Other | The Literacy Field Base Officer will, at times, be required to undertake other duties related to the role as directed by the Literacy Program Coordinator, Program Director or/and the Country Director. This may include assisting in specific tasks required in the Literacy Team such as communication, monitoring and evaluation, and coordination of meetings. The Literacy Field Base Officer will undertake staff development programs that are made available in order to maintain a high level of awareness of best practice in literacy education. It is possible for this role to evolve to capitalise on the individual strengths and initiative of the person in the position. | ||
